On the positive side, horizontal centrifugal pumps have easily accessible internal components, making them easier to install and maintain. You can choose the right shaft design to provide the desired pumping pressure. Low suction applications are best served with overhanging shafts, while you need bearing internal shafts for high suction. Horizontal centrifugal pumps can be easily and securely attached to external accessories such as turbines, electric motors or fuel-powered engines. Finally, the low headroom of a horizontal pump makes it ideal for indoor applications where vertical space is often tight.

 

On the downside, if your plant requires floor space considerations, horizontal centrifugal pumps will take up a larger footprint. In general, horizontal pumps operate at lower temperatures and pressures compared to vertical pumps. You also do not want to use a horizontal centrifugal pump for applications that require a higher NPSH (net positive suction head) than the particular pump can provide. In this sense, it has a limited capacity.

When you have limited surface area and need a pump with a smaller footprint, vertical centrifugal pumps are sure to take up less floor space. They are ideal for fluids with high temperatures and pressures, and can be modified from NPSH to handle a wider range of applications.
